The inner spirit of Thanks Giving

Thanks to the ALMIGHTY.

Every moment of everyday should be an occasion of thanks giving to the God almighty. We thank god for all we have today.

Today I am making a pumpkin cheesecake. I am a vegetarian and I enjoy pumpkin preparations.

It is a thanks giving feast to all our guests. It is thanks giving day to all my blog friends spread across the globe. It is a thanks giving day for internet facility which is now more than 25 years old.

Thanks giving Day is celebrated with lot of fervor and merry-making. Thanksgiving Day is a time of festivity, family meals and reunions in America.

Carved turkeys, Pumpkin Pie, Corns, Cranberry Sauce are the traditional dishes adorning the dinner tables in almost every house.

A time for feasting, Thanksgiving Day epitomizes the holiday mood of people.

Thanksgiving Day is the official beginning of the Christmas season.

The big pumpkins have got a fat story in the name of THANKS Giving Day.

After a number of events and changes, President Lincoln proclaimed last Thursday in November as a day of thanks giving in the year 1863. This was due to the continuous efforts of Sarah Joseph Hale, a magazine editor. She wrote a number of articles for the cause.

Thanksgiving Day originated in America. Over the days it has spread its wings to other continents of the world as well. Thanksgiving is essentially a harvest related festival dedicated to communal harmony. They are observed with different names and in different seasons.

Canada celebrates thanksgiving on the second Monday in the month of October. India also has a number of harvest related festivals in different regions. Popular regional festivals are Pongal, Baisakhi, Lohri, Onam etc.Other Asian countries such as China, Malaysia, and Korea celebrate the festival on different dates. Each festival has a folklore attached to it. Harmony, peace, feeling gratitude is the underlying theme of the celebration all over.

As a communal effort to reunite people all over the world, the millennium year 2000 was proclaimed as the ‘International year of Thanksgiving’ by the United Nations.

The idea behind the declaration was to spread peace, harmony and brotherhood. Celebrate the gift of life given to us by god as the noblest expression of the human spirit.

The declaration also served the purpose of fostering cultural relations among different countries.

The roots of this custom date back to the legendary pilgrims crossed the Atlantic in the year 1620 in Mayflower-A 17th Century sailing vessel. About 102 people traveled for nearly two months with extreme difficulty. The pilgrims comforted themselves by singing Psalms- a sacred song.

In the summer of 1621, owing to severe drought, pilgrims called for a day of fasting and prayer to please God and ask for a bountiful harvest in the coming season. God answered their prayers and it rained at the end of the day. It saved the corn crops which helped all of them survive.

In the autumn of 1621, they held a grand celebration where 90 people were invited including Indians. The grand feast was organized to thank god for his favors.

This communal dinner is popularly known as “The first thanksgiving feast”.

There is however, no evidence to prove if the dinner actually took place. While some historians believe pilgrims were quite religious so, their thanksgiving would have included a day of fasting and praying, others say that the Thanksgiving dinner did take place.

Offering thanks teaches us spirit of appreciation.
