SLUM DOG MILLIONAIRE – An Oscar harbinger?

The season’s most prominent film title is SLUM DOG MILLIONAIRE.

The portrait and the striking images of the film have already attracted the Oscar Buzz amongst critic’s heart. It has been branded as an Oscar harbinger and headed for many prizes and Academy Award.

This striking title of the film has the potential to score a big audience. The story will stay in the mind’s eye a long time and would appeal to most of the international cine goers.

SLUMDOG MILLIONAIRE is the story of Jamal Malik, an 18 year-old orphan from the slums of Mumbai, who is about to experience the biggest day of his life. With the whole nation watching, he is just one question away from winning a staggering 20… SLUM DOG MILLIONAIRE is the story of Jamal Malik (Dev Patel), an 18 year-old was orphaned as a young child due to religious strife, reduced to begging and stealing to survive on the streets of Mumbai, lost the love of his life with Latika (Freida Pinto) twice.

He is now being tortured by police after being accused of cheating just one question away from taking the big prize money of staggering 20 million Indian rupees, on India’s version of “Who Wants to Be a Millionaire?

He is rescued by a female lawyer who gets him to tell his life story and explain how he, an uneducated slum kid, knew the answers to such difficult questions.

The film is directed by the English director Danny Boyle (Trainspotting, 28 Days Later) .Producer of the film is Christian Colson.

The story of the movie is based on a novel “Q & A “by an Indian Diplomat Vikas Swarup.

Screen writer Simon Beaufoy (The Full Monty) delivers an accurate portrait of life in Mumbai slums. Starring, Dev Patel, Irrfan Khan, Anil Kapoor, Madhur Mittal, Freida pinto and the music is composed by A.R. Rahman.

The movie is sprayed with colorful drops of darker side of the Third world squalor.

Despite a potentially depressing setup, “Slum dog” is actually one of most life-affirming movies to come along in years. It’s a mystery and a drama with many comedic moments.

Eighteen year old British newcomer Dev Patel stars as Jamal has an effortless charm that instantly sucks us in and makes us empathize with Jamal even when the question of his innocence or guilt is suspect.
Times reported that — the people have spoken, or at least voted. Slum dog Millionaire, a Dickensian fable that plunges into the noisy, colorful and perilous urban chaos of India, has joined the ranks of American Beauty, Crouching Tiger, Hidden Dragon and Whale Rider as a winner of the People’s Choice Award, selected by festival goers and often an Oscar harbinger.
